Nebraska voters to decide on two online betting measures
Initiative 440 would legalise betting in the constitution; 441 would set the rules around it.
The hit
Nebraska voters will get a direct say on legalising online sports betting, according to 3 News Now. Two initiatives, Measure 440 & Measure 441, would amend the state constitution to allow it & set out the rules around it.
Why it matters
Backers say Nebraskans already cross into states like Iowa to bet, leaving tax revenue on the table for other states & unregulated platforms. Political consultant Jordan McGrain, who led the petition drives, says legalising & regulating betting would let Nebraska collect that money instead & fund property tax relief. The Nebraska Council on Problem Gambling says it is neutral but wants safeguards built in if voters approve it.
The record
| States with legal online betting | 32 states plus Washington, D.C. (American Gaming Association) |
|---|---|
| Share of tax revenue earmarked for property relief | 70% (Jordan McGrain) |
| Ballot measures at stake | Initiative 440 (constitutional change) & Initiative 441 (rules) |
| Public hearings | Saturday, 1:30pm, Omaha Public Library Millard Branch (Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office) |
What happens next
Nebraska’s Secretary of State’s Office holds hearings on both measures Saturday at 1:30pm at the Omaha Public Library’s Millard Branch.
