Brazil & football clash in court over R$1bn betting sponsorship
The Brazilian Football Confederation says betting firms are the main sponsors for clubs in Brazil’s top two divisions.
The hit
Brazil’s finance ministry told the Supreme Federal Court its betting ban should stand, even as it admitted regulation had improved player protection. The ministry argued licensing & taxation had failed to stop wider social harm, according to Casino.org.
Why it matters
The case pits the government against football’s finances. The Brazilian Football Confederation says betting firms are the main sponsors for 27 of the 40 clubs in Brazil’s top two divisions, & Flamengo says it built its budget around those deals. The CBF, Flamengo & the Brazilian Olympic Committee all warned of lost funding if the ban holds.
The record
| Hearing date | Tuesday, November 3, Supreme Federal Court |
|---|---|
| Gamblers’ losses cited | R$62 billion ($11.3bn) lost to betting firms (finance ministry) |
| GDP hit estimated | R$120bn-R$140bn ($21.9bn-$25.6bn) (finance ministry) |
| Club sponsorship at risk | R$1bn ($183m) across 27 of 40 top-two-division clubs (CBF) |
| Flamengo’s exposure | R$430m ($79m) a year in sponsorship & broadcasting (Flamengo vice president Willeman) |
| Olympic funding at risk | ~20% of the 2027 budget (Brazilian Olympic Committee) |
What happens next
Justice Luiz Fux made no ruling at the hearing on the ban’s constitutionality. Watch for further appeals court decisions after Casa de Apostas won a temporary exemption & reopened, while Stake’s earlier injunction was overturned within days.
