Reporter loses $10,702 on DraftKings while posing as problem gambler
ProPublica reports reporter Jake Pearson got a VIP invite & a personal host as he mimicked a problem gambler on the app.
The hit
DraftKings handed VIP status to a reporter who was deliberately mimicking a problem gambler, according to a ProPublica investigation. Jake Pearson says he was invited to try the VIP programme a day after blowing $1,800 in one night chasing NBA losses. He went on to deposit $5,800 before DraftKings assigned him a personal host.
Why it matters
According to ProPublica, Pearson showed classic warning signs: bigger bets, loss chasing, long sessions, a shift to faster casino play. DraftKings reportedly sent occasional pop-up reminders, but Pearson says he never triggered a manual review, even after a self-imposed cooling-off period rewarded with a 25% deposit match. Instead he reportedly got more promos & profit boosts. Regulators are reportedly starting to ask why.
