First-ever Ontario iGaming shutdown penalty lands on PointsBet Canada
PointsBet initially denied offering Porter bets before reversing that answer after the Rozier-Billups arrests.
The hit
PointsBet Canada has agreed to a two-day suspension of its Ontario operations, cut down from five, settling a dispute with the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario over its handling of suspicious betting linked to Jontay Porter. The date of the shutdown is still to be set, a PointsBet Canada spokesperson said on 21 October.
Why it matters
This is the first time an Ontario-regulated iGaming operator has agreed to shut down its site as a regulatory penalty, a precedent other operators will watch closely. The case also shows regulators circling back on operators’ early denials once a wider scandal, like the Rozier-Billups arrests, forces fresh scrutiny of old answers.
The record
| Original penalty | 5-day Ontario suspension ordered by the AGCO in February |
|---|---|
| Settled penalty | 2-day Ontario suspension agreed with the AGCO |
| Initial AGCO claim | PointsBet Canada told regulator in March 2024 it had not offered Porter bets |
| Reversal trigger | October 2025 arrests of NBA’s Terry Rozier & Chauncey Billups prompted AGCO to re-query operators |
| Porter’s exposure | Statutory maximum of 20 years for conspiracy to commit wire fraud; sentencing set for December |
What happens next
Watch for the date PointsBet Canada sets for its two-day Ontario shutdown, plus the findings of the independent audit the AGCO has ordered as part of the settlement.
